Beautiful island with wonderful rich flora and fauna and exceptional diversity of bird species and a lot of migration in second half april and May and in autumn. We stayed in centrally situated nice small village Skala Kalloni in pleasant nice quiet Hotel Aichaion in West River” valley (picture below). We visited predominantly surroundings of Skala Kalloni, so cakked “East” and “West River” and observed many,many bird species. East coast area, South coast area and the rocky South West coast area. Every area has a significantly different biotope and corresponding species like Bee-eaters in sandy areas near the rivers in Skala Kalloni and Rock Trush (Blauwe Rotslijster) in higher rocky areas. Best time of year is second half April, first half May, when migration is at its top: every week another collection of species. We prefer second/third week of May. Some migrating birds stay but one or two weeks like Terns (Sterns), Shrikes (Klauwieren), some a few days like Rose Starling (Rosse Spreeuw) and some birds of prey mor orare passing by. Breeding of local birds starts begin May: Bee-eater (Bijeneter), Rufus Bush Chat (Rosse Waaierstaart), Avocet (Steltkluut), etcetera. Many flowers, reptiles and beautiful butterflies.
