Arctic Tern (Noordse Stern): elegant beautiful bird, migrates from North to South Pole, defends his nest vigorously with sharp bill. Often difficult distinguishing from Common Tern (Visdief), below at this page. Key characteristics: more elegant, longer tail feathers, breast a bit darker grey, upper part tail pure white, somewhat shorter bill, no black tip bill.

Whiskered Tern (Witwangstern): Marsh Tern. Relatively small bird.

Black Tern (Zwarte Stern): Marsh Tern. Relatively small bird. Builds nest on floating plants like Krabbescheer) or on rafts installed via bird protection projects. Catches insects at the water surface, sometimes also small fishes. Territorial fights occasionally quite furious. Its elegant but unpredictable flight and actions are often a real challenge for bird photographers and a matter of taking the right position not too close and not too far of the expected action, choosing the right converter, lens and autofocus settings. For example Nikon DSLR’s: Autofocus auto (requires APERTURE < f/9) and a3 = short for example, Nikon System Z camera’s accordingly. These Terns are perfect for practicing bird action photography because tend to hunt alongside lakes, canals, ditches, an are not very shy so you can get nearby.
