Making a technically correct photograph in general

In order to make a technically correct digital photograph you need to:

  • Ensure all default settings (standaard instellingen) are in order. See Default settings camera’s and lenses
  • Ensure all general settings are in order. See General settings camera
  • Focus the camera. (see below). This results in sharp brilliant pictures.
  • Set ISO value and EXPOSURE TIME value correctly. This results in maximal detail, minimal noise (ruis), correct intensity of light and optimal contrast in all areas, High Lights, Lights, Shadows and Darks. See EXPOSURE TIME.

In practice you have to focus and set EXPOSRE TIME by setting correct ISO value (working “ISO driven”) and sometimes setting EXPOSURE TIME (+/- button), because in bird photography APERTURE value is usually more or less fixed once you are photographing (in APERTURE mode that is).

Some extra detail: By the way do not forget that some birds may be too fast flyers given your current (affordable) equipment. Our experience and measurements show that for example our D500 or Z50 cannot always focus track fast moving or unpredictably turning birds like Great Spotted Woodpecker (Groet Bonte Specht), Lapwing (Kievit) or Terns (Sterns)! You may need more expensive equipment like a D6. Even using our Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF VR wich gave us twice the light of our beloved Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF VR could not always keep up with all twists and turns of this type of flying racing machines. So don’t get frustrated because everything including professional photographic equipment has its price. If you may succeed alltogether then please let us know!
